From the recording Give Life To The Living
LYRICS:
Do what you wanna do
Be what you wanna be, yea
If it makes you free
If it brings you peace, yea
⠀
Do what you gotta do
Even the sun is blue, yea
When it's over you
Heart and soul, what do you
⠀
Yea
Yea
Yea
Yea
⠀
What are you trying to prove
Life is only true, yea
When it's true to you
Love and light, why try to...
⠀
Do what you wanna do
Be what you wanna be, yea
If it makes you free
If it brings you peace, yea
⠀
Yea
Yea
Yea
Yea
⠀
If you feel the light in you, then it's true
If you feel the light in you, then it's true
If you feel the light in you, then it's true
If you feel the light in you, then it's true
⠀
Yea
Yea
Yea
Yea
⠀
If you feel the light in you, then it's true
If you feel the light in you, then it's true
If you feel the light in you, then it's true
If you feel the light in you, then it's true
⠀
Yea
Yea
Yea
Yea
SONG MEANING:
this reflects my intended meaning behind the song, but the song is still open to individual interpretation.
The song is about living freely and truthfully, resisting pressure to become something for other people, and recognizing spiritual truth through the light within yourself.
⠀
“Do what you wanna do / Be what you wanna be / If it makes you free / If it brings you peace” opens almost like permission being given to the listener. The emphasis is not simply on doing whatever feels good, but on moving toward freedom and peace. Those become the standards by which the choice is measured.
⠀
“Do what you gotta do” adds responsibility to that freedom. The song is not only about desire; sometimes there are things a person simply has to do in order to become who they are or move toward peace.
⠀
“Even the sun is blue / When it's over you” turns the sun into an emotional image. Something normally associated with warmth and light can still appear blue, sad, distant, or transformed depending on the person beneath it. The outside world does not automatically determine the inner state.
⠀
“Heart and soul, what do you” feels intentionally unfinished, almost as though the question cannot be completed for someone else. The answer has to come from the person's own heart and soul rather than being supplied from outside.
⠀
“What are you trying to prove” challenges the need for external validation. The speaker questions why someone should shape their life around proving something to other people.
⠀
“Life is only true / When it's true to you” becomes one of the central ideas of the song. A life lived according to somebody else's expectations may still be a life, but it is not fully authentic. Truth has to become inwardly real rather than merely accepted because someone else says it is true.
⠀
“Love and light, why try to...” again breaks off before completing the thought. It can feel like the speaker is questioning why love and light need to be forced, demonstrated, or justified at all. If they are genuine, they should arise naturally rather than becoming another performance.
⠀
The return to “Do what you wanna do / Be what you wanna be” reinforces that rejection of performance. The song keeps bringing the listener back toward freedom, peace, and an honest sense of self.
⠀
“If you feel the light in you, then it's true” gives the song its strongest spiritual dimension. “Light” can represent God, goodness, truth, love, conscience, or spiritual awakening. The important thing is that the light is experienced inwardly.
⠀
The line does not present truth as something imposed purely from outside. The person recognizes it because something within responds to it. The repeated phrase makes that recognition feel increasingly certain: if the light is genuinely alive within you, then what you are experiencing has become real to you.
⠀
The repetition also turns the ending almost into a mantra. The earlier verses question identity, freedom, proof, and authenticity; the ending simplifies everything into one test: is there light within you?
